Common WiFi Issues Blog Cover

Have you experienced annoying WiFi Issues and didn’t know how to solve them? We may have the solution for you.

WiFi is something everyone expects to have access to 24/7. We have all become accustomed to having WiFi so easily available whether it’s for working from home, streaming our favourite series or listening to music. We don’t think twice about the connection required until suddenly we experience an unexpected connection problem.

A loss of connection can seem like the end of the world, especially if you’re in the middle of doing something important online. Unfortunately, things like this are bound to happen with wireless internet. The good news is that most of the time the issues are easy to fix, so you can get back up and running relatively quickly.

When your WiFi does go down for a particular reason you can restore access on your own by troubleshooting some of the following common WiFi Issues;

In some rooms, the internet may be slow or unavailable.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves, thus your router broadcasts from a single spot to all directions. If your router is located in a remote area of your home, you are unintentionally blocking out a lot of the outside world. Move your router to a more central position if you can. The reception will be better throughout your home the nearer you can position your router to the centre of your coverage area.

If you have an external or internal Antenna such as our Signal Booster, you can also try adjusting that too. We recommend trying in multiple areas in the house, close to a window at a high point in the home. If external, mount it high on the roof but try different sides of the house until you get the best speeds. Remember the router may not be the issue for the slow speeds, it could be that the walls are thick in the houses and this is where the panel is needed to improve the speeds. This could be the answer to your internet issues.

A certain device that won’t connect to the WiFi

Sometimes you may experience Wi-Fi problems with a specific device. Most likely, it’s just a brief network glitch. Try disabling and then reenabling your device’s Wi-Fi. If it doesn’t work, try unplugging your router and then plugging it back in.

If this doesn’t work or it happens again with that device, you can try deleting your current network from the list of saved networks on your device. Then reconnect it again.

The network connects, but there’s no internet access

It may sound like an obvious tip, but simply try unplugging your router for a couple of seconds and plugging it back in. If this doesn’t solve the issue, you can try resetting the router.

You can connect a laptop or desktop to your router with an Ethernet cable. If this works then the router is causing an issue and may need to be reset. If there is still a problem, you may have an outage and will need to contact your provider.

The Wi-Fi connection is gone when logging back into a computer

This problem can occur on Windows 10 devices due to an issue with Fast Startup. Fast Startup keeps some operations going so you may log back in immediately. However, sometimes this can cause a bug with the wireless driver preventing it from automatically reconnecting to the Wi-Fi.

A simple solution to this problem is turning off the Fast Startup setting on Windows.

Smart Devices not connecting to WiFi

The last thing you want after buying a new smart device is for it not to connect to the internet. If you do experience this thankfully we have a few solutions to prevent these WiFi issues.

The first thing you need to ensure is that both the router and your smart device are updated. After that, you can try restarting your router and rebooting your smart devices. This can be done by either unplugging and replugging the smart device or you can check the app for a reboot option. For example, google home has an app where you can find a reboot tool.

If you still can’t manage to connect your device, try going next to the router to connect it.  The distance can make a difference especially if it’s a small smart device.

If your issue is that your smart device keeps dropping the WiFi signal, especially during busy times of the day. You may need to check if your router supports automatic band switching for devices. If it does you may have to consider switching this feature off. What happens is that your router will try to move your smart device to a different band, but the device isn’t ready for it. This results in the connection dropping.

Your Gaming system won’t connect to WiFi

First, make sure nothing is wrong with your gaming platform by checking social media and Downdetector. Xbox Live and Playstation Network occasionally go down for a variety of reasons, but they usually come back online quickly.

If everything appears to be in order, restart your router and gaming console to see if they can connect. You should also use this opportunity to check your internet connection. You can check your internet connection in the Settings menu of common consoles like Xbox and PlayStation. This will provide you options to test network speeds and can provide more details on what’s wrong and will provide a solution.

If both your console and router seem to be working fine but the WiFi keeps dropping, you can try moving the two devices closer together. See if this improves connection, and make sure there are no obstructions from the space between the router and console for the best result.

As you can see there are many WiFi issues people face, you are not the only one. I know it can be frustrating to deal with, but thankfully there are solutions to fix these issues.

After readig them and talking about our choices, my wife and I liked the reviews of Rural Wifi, they had lots of them and the comments were very positive. So after all our research, we made our decision and are very happy with it. Excellent, reliable company I have been with Rural WiFi for a number of years now. I have found them to be extremely reliable and reasonably priced. I live in the countryside and have forestry around my house. I tried a few companies before I found Rural WiFi, they are the only company that got us connected at a decent speed, even the landline speed was extremely slow (not fiberoptic) through eircom. Rural WiFi customer service is one of the best I've ever dealt with. They return a call or email when they say they will, they deal with the issue promptly and professionally. I recommend Rural WiFi 100%
