The Connection

Understanding the connection

When it comes to your internet connection its not as simple as a one size fits all. There is multiple options when it comes to choosing internet, however you may not have them all available to you.

Most rural areas in Ireland rely on four types of Internet connections;

  • Fibre to the Cabinet – The old copper telephone, also known as the DSL.
  • Fibre to the home – A new Fibre Optic cable.
  • Wireless Broadband – A wireless service provided through local masts.
  • Satellite – Provided by communication Satellites in space!

In every instance, a Modem/Router is the device used to deliver the WiFi/Broadband to a user. However, the placement of this device is vital to the user experience. Generally the distance from the Modem can affect the stability and connection performance of the WiFi and result in a loss of connection or a drop in speed.

This is where a Smart Home WiFi System comes in.

This is a mesh kit add-on that extends the router’s signal to other points around the house. Therefore you are not restricted to browsing in the room the Modem is in. A mesh kit will create blanket coverage across your entire home and prevent drop offs.

But… let’s back up a little… first things first, getting adequate speeds and a stable connection is the most important part! Hence the type of Internet you have available determines how good the internet comes into your house.

Types of Broadband

1. Fibre – which is also known as Fibre to the home. This is an optical cable installed underground and connected to an access point in your home. Fibre is currently the fastest internet available in Ireland providing speeds up to 2G.

Advantages of Fibre Broadband

  • -The connection is instant and reliable.
  • -The speeds are very high up to 2000 Mbps.

The optical cable that comes with fibre wires the internet directly into your home. Which gives the user instant response time as the connection is actually delivered by light that is carried up the wires at 70% the speed of light. One could say it is light speed internet!

2. DSL

– the older Fibre to the Cabinet service through a copper line. DSL has a very poor transmission and packet loss and can sometimes only provide 20 Mbps speed.

3. Wireless Broadband

wireless broadband runs off local WiFi masts.

For Wireless Broadband the Modem placement is crucial (see image below). The Modem should be placed as close to the direction of a local mast as possible. Don’t worry our team will guide you through the optimal placement process! Figuring out the best location to ensure a good signal connection is tricky, but once the sweet spot is found, you could achieve speeds of up to 300 Mbps. The best place for the Modem may be the attic or the room at the back of the house and in turn, the signal might not reach everywhere in your home.

This is why Wireless Broadband benefits the most from the addition of a Mesh Kit Extender also known as a Smart Home WiFi System.

4. Satellite

And finally we have Satellite internet.

– satellite internet is provided through communication satellites in space and it pings down to the satellite dish on your house. Satellite is the last resort on internet choices because of the latency. This is also known as the Ping, and it affects the speed of internet reaching your home. Basically how the internet travels from space to your home and back. This causes a lag or connection delay making video and WiFi calls very difficult and online gaming next to impossible.

Very happy and highly recommend. Last month we were looking for a new internet provider and spent some time reading reviews of the providers in our area. After readig them and talking about our choices, my wife and I liked the reviews of Rural Wifi, they had lots of them and the comments were very positive. So after all our research, we made our decision and are very happy with it. They offer great service which is hard to find these days and they also have a wonderful and friendly customer service team when you need them

Excellent, reliable company I have been with Rural WiFi for a number of years now. I have found them to be extremely reliable and reasonably priced. I live in the countryside and have forestry around my house. I tried a few companies before I found Rural WiFi, they are the only company that got us connected at a decent speed, even the landline speed was extremely slow (not fiberoptic) through eircom. Rural WiFi customer service is one of the best I've ever dealt with. They return a call or email when they say they will, they deal with the issue promptly and professionally. I recommend Rural WiFi 100%
