Understanding the connection
When it comes to your internet connection its not as simple as a one size fits all. There is multiple options when it comes to choosing internet, however you may not have them all available to you.
Most rural areas in Ireland rely on four types of Internet connections;
- Fibre to the Cabinet – The old copper telephone, also known as the DSL.
- Fibre to the home – A new Fibre Optic cable.
- Wireless Broadband – A wireless service provided through local masts.
- Satellite – Provided by communication Satellites in space!
In every instance, a Modem/Router is the device used to deliver the WiFi/Broadband to a user. However, the placement of this device is vital to the user experience. Generally the distance from the Modem can affect the stability and connection performance of the WiFi and result in a loss of connection or a drop in speed.
This is where a Smart Home WiFi System comes in.

Types of Broadband
1. Fibre – which is also known as Fibre to the home. This is an optical cable installed underground and connected to an access point in your home. Fibre is currently the fastest internet available in Ireland providing speeds up to 2G.

- -The speeds are very high up to 2000 Mbps.

2. DSL
– the older Fibre to the Cabinet service through a copper line. DSL has a very poor transmission and packet loss and can sometimes only provide 20 Mbps speed.

For Wireless Broadband the Modem placement is crucial (see image below). The Modem should be placed as close to the direction of a local mast as possible. Don’t worry our team will guide you through the optimal placement process! Figuring out the best location to ensure a good signal connection is tricky, but once the sweet spot is found, you could achieve speeds of up to 300 Mbps. The best place for the Modem may be the attic or the room at the back of the house and in turn, the signal might not reach everywhere in your home.

4. Satellite
And finally we have Satellite internet.
– satellite internet is provided through communication satellites in space and it pings down to the satellite dish on your house. Basically how the internet travels from space to your home and back. This causes a lag or connection delay making video and WiFi calls very difficult and online gaming next to impossible.
