Rural WiFi is connecting Ireland to WiFi but we are also connecting with each of these beautiful small towns and areas that we venture to. First up on our connecting Ireland series is Slane, nestled in the heart of County Meath. Slane is a town rich in history and culture, with breathtaking landscapes. The river Boyne flows through the town and connects it to the natural beauty with its crystal-clear waters, and lush green banks.

The Boyne is a mighty river that stretches for over 70 miles, from its source in County Kildare to its mouth at the Irish Sea. Along the way, it passes through some of the most scenic and historic landscapes in Ireland, including the famous Boyne Valley.

The Boyne has also played a significant role in Slane’s history, from the battles fought along its banks to the legends and myths that have grown up around it.

Perhaps the most famous of these legends is the story of the Battle of the Boyne, which took place just a few miles downstream from Slane in 1690. This historic battle, between the forces of the Catholic King James II and the Protestant King William III, marked a turning point in Irish history. The Boyne also features in Irish mythology, with tales of the river’s magical powers and the legendary Salmon of Knowledge that dwells within its waters.

The river Boyne creates unique lifestyles in Slane and brings the community together. Kayaking is a very popular sport in the town, showcased here by the Silver Bridge Kayak Club, the communities in Slane are actively involved to keep the river clean and pollution free and have set up the Save the Boyne Organisation and discussions are ongoing on various online platforms.

If visiting Slane we recommend a walk along the River Boyne’s banks, Slane Castle, The Hill of Slane, Littlewood Forest and Francis Ledwidge Museum all are highly recommended.

We are delighted to start our series of connecting Ireland in this beautiful town, join us as we fly across the landscapes and connect rural Ireland to WiFi. Tune in next month as we connect and showcase another beautiful location in Ireland.
