Wireless Broadband; 5G has a bad reputation and is a rich topic at the conspiracy theory seminars. For example, they blamed 5G for travel restrictions last summer and now the rising cost of Grain. These claims are false.

5G promises to increase 4G speeds 10x and seems to be the wireless equivalent to Fibres 1000 Mbps and a genuine rival to Fibre-Optic. How can this be true?

What is Fibre-Optic technology? Data travels through an optical cable much faster than copper wires, significantly reducing packet loss. Fibre Broadband with lightning-fast speed provides a smooth user experience. Fibre internet connection is seamless, downloading large files, playing online games without latency, and improving every aspect of the internet. Please take comfort in knowing that whatever the world wide web throws at you, Fibre Broadband can handle it.

However, in reality, Fibre Broadband may fall short, and depending on location, many rural internet users have copper wires between them and a 100% fibre connection. A copper wire between the broadband router and a Fiber-Optic cable becomes known as “Part Fibre” or “Fibre to the cabinet”. The lucky 100% Fibre-Optic users are usually capped at 1000 Mbps.

So the solution? Bypass wires, go wireless and go straight from the Broadband to the mast. Wireless technology is still in its infancy, but it is rapidly evolving and growing at an incredible rate, and 5G is just around the corner.

My experience with 5G was disappointing, but if you live in the city and close to an NR mast, you could have a much better experience.

I found the issue with 5G was the range; for 5G to operate at full capacity, a user would need to be based 500 meters from an NR connection point (transmitting mast) to enjoy 5G speeds. However, 4G LTE can travel up to 16,000 meters.

So at the moment, I would have to say that 5G is just not reliable in the rural setting yet, but we are getting some fantastic results from 4G and reaching average speeds of 100Mbps.

The majority of Irish Internet user speeds range from 24Mbps to 100Mbps. So if your speed falls inside this range, you could be enjoying a seamless working from home environment and should have no problem with Ultra HD 4k streaming.

My top tip is:

Try wireless if you’re getting speeds below 24Mbps from your current Broadband provider (check your speed here). There is no need to disconnect your old provider until you are satisfied with the wireless Broadband. In short, you can stack the wireless Broadband on top of your current internet network with no crossover.
